RHEA at the Ninth European Space Weather Week
Wavre, Belgium, 23rd November 2012 – RHEA System S.A. (RHEA) was pleased to once again sponsor the European Space Weather Week, which took place this year on 5th–9th November in Brussels, Belgium. At this highly successful ninth edition, RHEA’s presence was again prominent, sponsoring the Key Debate and presenting a review of Precursor Space Weather services – a key element of the European Space Agency’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Programme.
RHEA, ESA Prime contractor for the recently-completed “Space Weather Precursor Services” contract, values its long lasting collaboration with ESA and collaborationto the Space Weather domain. The Space Weather segment aims at creating a consolidated infrastructure to provide services related to the impacts of space weather across a range of user domains. Within the Precursor Services activity, RHEA was tasked to compile a suite of “development roadmaps” showing the evolution to a fully federated, service-oriented architecture maximizing utilization of specialist space weather expertise across Europe. RHEA led a team of internationally recognized experts in compiling these strategic roadmaps, and an overview of the process and results was presented by Dr. Gareth Lawrence during the first session of the conference.
Another highlight was the Key Debate on the topic “Safe space - is a programme for the removal of space debris necessary?” This RHEA-sponsored event brought together a panel of six experts representing European agencies, industry and research institutions in front of an inquisitive audience. Both the lively debate and subsequent probing questions from the floor were expertly handled.
With the imminent Ministerial Council providing a sharp focus for the week’s events, the meeting was again a great success. “RHEA is proud to take an active role in this annual major event in the European Space Industry,” said Simon Reid, RHEA System’s Chief Technology Engineer. “ESA’s SSA Programme provides a unique opportunity to consolidate the expertise of all stakeholders, and signals a significant step forward for Space Weather in Europe. RHEA has been a primary provider of Space Weather expertise to ESA for almost 15 years, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with our collaborators and World leading experts to help further enhance Europe’s capability.”
