You will have the opportunity to support ESA to prepare, maintain and systematically distribute to the broadest possible audience high-quality elaborated EO imagery and animations that graphically illustrate the scientific content of EO data in an attractive, easily comprehensible manner, and capture the public imagination by highlighting the inherent aesthetic qualities of EO imagery.  

Tasks and Activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Systematically survey ESA EO data catalogues, acquisition plans and data archives to identify raw EO data sets suitable for visualisation elaboration in a promotional context
  • Order, retrieve, post-process EO data products (Level-2, L-3) as required for visualization
  • Gather any required supplementary data (e.g. DEM)
  • Utilize ESA EO toolboxes and COTS SW to read, correct, (e.g. geo-code), superpose images
  • Normalize or calibrate data products as required for visualization
  • Extract bands or acquisition dates, merge for multi-temporal / multi-channel images
  • Enhance images with professional image processing tools e.g. Photoshop.
  • Extract global parameter sets interpolate and project for animated 3D global time-varying fields (e.g. SST, Ocean colour, vegetation)
  • Ensure systematic generation “EO Image of the week” for publication on ESA web portal
  • Prepare dedicated data visualizations to support specific EO Promotional events such as launches, VIP events, major symposia
  • Liaise with ESA Communication service for compliance with ESA media formats & standards
  • Maintain up to date searchable database of all EO Data visualizations generated
  • Liaise with ESA EO experts to ensure scientific integrity of visualizations
Skills and Experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • You have a degree in a relevant technical field such as Computer Science, Geography, Geosciences
  • You have at least 5 years of experience in a directly relevant industrial or research environment
  • Proven experience in high-quality EO data scientific visualization
  • Sound technical knowledge of ESA EO missions and applications
  • Familiarity with ESA EO data products, formats, user toolboxes
  • Familiar with ESA EO data product ordering and access mechanisms
  • Expert in use of EO image processing software packages (IDL, ENVI)
  • Combined creative visual ability with good scientific understanding of EO

Preference will be given to candidates eligible for an EU or national personal security clearance at the level of CONFIDENTIAL or above.
