RHEA Group has been awarded a multi-year contract by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) for the provision of system engineering services for the implementation of the European Commission’s (EC’s) DestinE programme. The project is due to be delivered in 2024, with the potential to extend the contract until 2027.

The DestinE initiative aims to deploy highly accurate digital replicas of the Earth – ‘digital twins’ – to monitor and simulate natural and human activities in order to develop and test scenarios that will enable more sustainable development and support European environmental policies. RHEA’s support to EUMETSAT covers the design and implementation of a self-standing DestinE Data Lake and Warehouse.

The DestinE Data Lake (DEDL) will fulfil the storage and access requirements for any data that is offered to DestinE users. It will provide users with a seamless access to the datasets via a graphical user interface (GUI) and application programming interfaces (APIs), regardless of data type and location.

Destination Earth is an EC initiative funded through the Digital Europe Programme. It will be developed over the next 3 to 8 years as a cooperative venture by major European institutions including the European Space Agency (ESA), EUMETSAT and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Initial services should be available as early as 2024.
