Matteo – Security Services Deputy Business Unit Manager
Matteo is RHEA’s Security Services Deputy Business Unit Manager. He is based in Belgium, working at RHEA’s Centre of Excellence in Diegem and at the European Space Security and Education Centre (ESA ESEC) in Redu.
What did you study and why?
I have a degree in Telecommunication Engineering and another Master’s degree in Software Engineering. In general, I have been fascinated by designing and building complex software systems since my twenties.
Is this the role you were initially employed for?
I’ve come quite a long way since joining RHEA in 2014. I was hired as a software engineer, then I moved to software architect, then to project manager. After that, I become Manager of Security Services R&D – and recently Deputy Business Unit Manager of Security Services.
What does your job involve?
Within Security Services, I oversee all the operational and technical aspects of the business unit activities, including all projects, services, security operations and products roadmaps.
What is your favourite aspect of your job?
In 7 years, I’ve seen Security Services grow from two people (I was the first with the Director) to 50 extremely strong professionals. Being part of this endeavour was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a life-changer for me. Our growth plans are ambitious, and being a key player is definitely an amazing aspect of my life!
What makes you want to get up for work each morning?
This sense of building something with an amazing team, making the business grow from zero to our ambitions. This is definitely my main driver.
In my professional experience, I have to rank RHEA as one of the best employers I have had. These values are leveraged constantly by the upper management towards middle management and employees as a foundational background of the company. We work hard together to achieve ambitious goals of absolute technical excellence. That is one of the most amazing aspects of the company!
How does your role make a difference to the success of your department?
My main strengths lie in a broad technical knowledge, supporting all Security Services operations and activities, and in the general business unit operational and technical coordination to support managers and project managers.
What made you want to work in this sector?
As an engineer, my main technical passions have been space and security for almost all my life. RHEA gave me the opportunity to combine these passions into a single job.
What are your aspirations for the future?
My path in RHEA was of growth – technically and as a manager. My goal is to keep growing, contributing to the success of the company and of my business unit, and expanding our market reach towards new objectives and horizons.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like reading (sci-fi, fantasy, science and history books), playing sport and organizing dinner with family and friends. I like travelling and have many friends across Europe, so often take short trips to visit them.
About my passions…Star Wars is definitely one of them!
Tell us something unusual about yourself?
I am extremely curious…about technology and people. I always love to be informed of everything. And I am a bit of a ‘control-freak’, which my team knows something about! In general, however, one of the best aspects of recent years was to learn to truly trust my team, which is definitely a key to growing and improving – not only as a manager, but also as a person.
